Hiking with huskies: our trail checklist
Everything that goes in the car and on the dogs before we leave the driveway. Assembled over a year of getting it wrong, documented for your convenience.
Luka & Sosa
Two ridiculously handsome Siberian huskies. One perpetually outnumbered human. Absolutely no adult supervision. The gear that survived them, the trails worth the drive, and advice nobody asked for.

Tracy's picks
Six things that survived two huskies, a year of creek crossings, and my complete lack of patience. Nothing here is sponsored filler. If it's on this page, it's still in my car.
Packs
They carry their own water now. They consider this a promotion.

Harnesses
Two summers of creek crossings, zero rubbed spots. The handle on top is for decisions made without me.

Safety
Huskies don't come when called. They come when found. Live location, escape alerts, and I sleep at night.
Shop →Grooming
Coat blowing season is not a season. It's a condition. The only brush that keeps up with two of them.
Shop →Water
Clips to the pack, folds flat, holds a full bottle. We own three. Someone keeps losing one and nobody will say who.
Shop →Summer
A double coat in summer heat is a design flaw nobody consulted me on. Soak it, wring it, hike on.

Our story
I learned to hike because of them. Two Siberian huskies with no concept of a rest day, and a human who had never once walked uphill on purpose. Somewhere along the way it became the thing the three of us look forward to most. What started as a way to give them a bigger world ended up making mine bigger, too.
This is where I keep the gear that earned its spot in the car, the trails worth the drive, and the parts of living with huskies nobody warns you about. The dogs have reviewed none of it. They have opinions anyway.
Meet the pack

Blue eyes · Head of Operations
If there's a trail, Luka is already on it. First out of the car, first in the creek, last to admit he's tired. Has never once questioned his own importance.
“I don't have a recall problem. You have a keeping up problem.”

Brown eyes · General Counsel
Sosa carries the pack, sets the pace and watches the trail like it's his job. As far as he's concerned, it is. Files a formal complaint when dinner runs four minutes late.
“Management has been notified. Repeatedly.”
Life advice from a husky
“Never argue with people committed to misunderstanding you. Their intellectual limitations are not your administrative responsibility.”
